However, there is a massive caveat for this specific body of water: Lake Sherwood is a highly restricted, strictly private fishery.

There are absolutely no public boat ramps, no public rentals, and no public shoreline access points. You must be a verified resident of the Lake Sherwood Community Association or an accompanied guest to legally wet a line here. Security patrols are active and will enforce trespassing regulations. For those legally on the water, expect excellent visibility. The lack of recent heavy precipitation has left the water relatively clear, meaning stealthy approaches and natural presentations will outproduce aggressive, noisy tactics.</p

2. TARGET SPECIES & ACTIVITY LEVELS

Largemouth Bass (High Activity): The current 59°F to 60°F water temperature is the ultimate biological trigger for pre-spawn movement. Big females are moving up from their deep wintering holes and staging on secondary points, rocky transitions, and the first drop-offs outside of shallow spawning coves. They are feeding heavily to build energy reserves for the spawn.

Crappie & Bluegill (Moderate to High Activity): Panfish are beginning to suspend around vertical structures, particularly deep-water docks and submerged brush piles. The bite is steady, especially during the warmer afternoon hours once the sun has had time to heat the upper water column.

Channel Catfish (Low Activity): Still somewhat lethargic from the winter chill, but a few are being picked up by anglers soaking cut baits near the bottom in deeper basins. They are not the primary target right now.

3. TACTICAL BREAKDOWN & LURE SELECTION

Because of the clear water conditions mentioned above, finesse and realism are your best friends right now. Downsizing your line to 6lb or 8lb fluorocarbon leaders is highly recommended to avoid spooking line-shy fish.

• Finesse Plastics: Drop-shot rigs and Ned rigs are dominating the bass bite. Use straight-tail worms in natural, translucent colors like Morning Dawn, Margarita Mutilator, or green pumpkin. Drag them slowly across rocky bottoms to mimic emerging crawfish.
• Reaction Baits: Suspending jerkbaits (like the Megabass Vision 110 in Pro Blue or natural shad) are lethal for intercepting cruising bass. Work them with aggressive twitches followed by exceptionally long pauses over staging areas. The strikes will almost always occur while the bait is sitting perfectly still.
• Panfish Gear: For crappie, cast 1/32 oz to 1/16 oz marabou jigs or small tube baits in white or chartreuse near dock pilings. Let them fall on a slack line and watch carefully for subtle ticks.

4. PRIME LOCATIONS ON LAKE SHERWOOD

If you have the credentials to fish the lake, focus your efforts on the northern shorelines. These areas receive the most direct sunlight throughout the day, warming the water a degree or two faster than the rest of the lake. Target the rocky points leading into the major coves. The lake's extensive network of private docks also provides excellent ambush points for staging bass; skipping lightweight jigs or wacky-rigged Senkos into the shadows of the deepest docks will yield consistent results.

5. REGIONAL PUBLIC ALTERNATIVE: LAKE CASITAS

For the vast majority of anglers who cannot legally access Lake Sherwood, Lake Casitas (located just a short drive up the 101 in Ventura County) is your premier public alternative. Casitas is currently experiencing the exact same biological triggers and temperature shifts. Unlike Sherwood, Casitas offers excellent public facilities, boat rentals, and miles of accessible shoreline.

At Casitas, the water level is healthy, and the bass are aggressively pushing baitfish into the backs of coves. Big swimbaits, deep-diving crankbaits, and the classic Casitas drop-shot are producing massive pre-spawn limits. Focus on the areas around the main island and the submerged trees in the Santa Ana Creek arm for your best shot at a trophy-class largemouth.

6. REGIONAL BIOLOGICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL INTEL

Across the Santa Monica Mountains and surrounding valleys, we are witnessing a significant biological shift. The warming trend has triggered the annual emergence of crawfish from the mud. Bass are actively hunting these crustaceans, which explains why green, brown, and orange-flaked soft plastics are currently outperforming pure shad profiles on the bottom. Additionally, the upcoming lunar phase will create darker nights, pushing fish to feed much more aggressively during daylight hours.
